Johannes Fend

Bassist/Composer

Johannes Fend is an Austrian double bassist based in Rotterdam, known for his distinctive use of the bow in jazz and cross-disciplinary projects. He explores the full range of the instrument — from deep resonance to high harmonics — often creating spacious, cinematic textures. His solo work combines technically demanding writing with improvisation and subtle electronics, resulting in an intense and emotionally direct sound. In ensemble settings, he brings this approach into dialogue with a wide range of musical contexts. Alongside his solo work, Johannes performs internationally as a sideman and collaborator in ensembles across Europe, Asia, and the Americas. He has received awards including the Leiden Jazz Award, Keep an Eye – The Records, and the Erasmus Jazz Prize (Best Soloist). Critics praise him as “innovative, virtuoso, and sensitive” (Süddeutsche Zeitung) and as “exceptionally musical” (Eddy Determeyer).
