Aurel Violas

drummer, composer, bandleader

After living successively in Paris, Brussels and Philadelphia, French drummer Aurel Violas settled in Amsterdam, where he graduated from the conservatory and studied with musicians such as Martijn Vink, Joris Roelofs and Reinier Baas. Together with trumpet player Antonio Moreno Glazkov (ES), he is co-leading Chai Masters, an Amsterdam-based sextet whose debut album Magic Realism received critical acclaim in the Netherlands, France, Belgium and Germany (NDR Jazz album of the week). He also leads and composes for his own trio that mostly performs in France.
As a sideman, he is currently collaborating with guitar player Piotr Lipowicz (PL), piano players Jia Xia (CN), Linde Tillmanns (NL) and Murat Ali Cengiz (TUR), as well as visual artist Muxingye Chen (CN) and church organist Elisabeth Hubmann (AT).

  • Chai Masters, the sextet I am co-leading, holds a great potential and we would like to be able to tour Europe regularly. With subsidies from the Amarte foundation, we moreover organized a tour in the Netherlands, Belgium and France last November (in venues such as Brouwerij Martinus in Groningen or the Sunside in Paris), and we would like to do it again, at a bigger scale. I am therefore coming to jazzahead to meet other venue programmers that would be interested in booking the band, but also associations or foundations that provide career monitoring, as well as press representatives.
