Mark Zandveld
Mark Zandveld, bassist, producer, and composer, was born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. He is
the permanent bassist for singer/composer Deborah Carter’s jazz quartet. Together, they have
produced a series of CDs, mostly on the New York label Dot Time Records.
In addition, Mark has his own instrumental group – “Zandscape”. A contemporary creative jazz
quartet plays his compositions. He also composed music for a jazz quartet plus string quartet
under the name Zandzemble.
Mark began studying guitar when he was 13 years old. After a few years, he decided to switch to
bass. He then began trading with various rhythm & blues groups alongside accompanying wellknown artists such as Arthur Conley, Candy Dulfer, etc.
In his mid-twenties, Mark went to Hollywood to study at the Musicians Institute in Hollywood,
where he was awarded the “Yamaha Bassist of the Year” award at the end of the course. When he
returned to Europe, he continued performing with various groups of R&B, funk, and jazz artists.
He also taught bass and music theory, both privately and at music schools, and participated in
seminars throughout Europe. His professional activities include concerts, workshops, and TV and
radio programs in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Spain, Portugal, France, Tunisia,
Azerbaijan, Turkey, Canada, the USA, and more.
Mark has programmed various jazz concert series and was the organizer of the Amsterdam Vocal
Sessions in the Netherlands for many years.
Nowadays, Mark Zandveld is also an instrument maker; he developed The Bace, a bass cello or a
handy mini-double bass. His instruments have found their way to the USA, Japan, Korea, and
many European countries. Website: the-bace.com
This year he is actually wearing several hats:
– Mark is available to discuss concert possibilities of jazz vocalist Deborah Carter (US/NL, Dot
Time Records recording artist) for who he wears the bassist, band-leader and booking contact
hats.
– Mark also wears the luthier hat, presenting The Bace – a bass instrument he developed as a
solution for bass guitarists looking for a contrabass-like sound. It has a cello body, a bass
guitar scale neck, contrabass strings, and a proprietary on-board electronics system with three
sound sources and a 3-channel mixer.
