Kaleidoscope Clubnight

Friday 25 April, Himmelssaal, jazzahead! Bremen

On Friday 25 April, Buma Cultuur and That Jazz Girl present the Kaleidoscope Clubnight as part of jazzahead! Clubnights in Bremen (DE). Kaleidoscope is a statement, a celebration of tolerance, equality and acceptance, but above all it is an evening of rock solid jazz from Dutch LGBTQ+ musicians. It is the first time in the history of jazzahead!, the world’s largest jazz conference, that the event has reserved such an explicit space for these communities within its programme.

The Himmelssaal (Hall of Heavens), built in 1930, has been described as an architectural Atlantis utopia and is full of mythical symbolism that was abused by the Nazis before and during the Second World War. This makes it a deliberate choice of location. We reclaim this space as a symbol of acceptance, strength and solidarity at a time when far from every non-hetero feels safe in their own environment, let alone in the (inter)national jazz scene. We celebrate music as well as the fight for equality, with a programme that underlines the strength of the LGBTQ+ community.

Of course, we won’t be doing this alone: Maaike den Dunnen will present her project Practicing Solitude, Daan Herweg will perform his latest album In Search of the Lost Chord (acclaimed by NPO Soul & Jazz in 2024) and the f/x collective PARRA.DICE will provide an energetic performance showcasing the power of both music and queer identity.

More than just a club night, Kaleidoscope is a celebration of pride, solidarity and the unmistakable message that LGBTQ+ acceptance should not be up for debate. Not now, not at home, not in the jazz community. Not ever. Will you join us?

A bold statement

Kaleidoscope Clubnight

Buma Cultuur and That Jazz Girl present Kaleidoscope, a Clubnight in Bremen’s beautiful Himmelssaal as a bold statement, a celebration of tolerance, equality and acceptance in jazz music. With jazz singer-songwriter Maaike den Dunnen, the eclectic pianist Daan Herweg and his quartet, and the exuberant grooves of young 9-piece PARRA.DICE, Kaleidoscope underlines the strength of the LGBTQ+ community.

A dose of pop and hip-hop, a strong love of free improvisation and classical music, and a distinctive sound that puts melody first: that’s what pianist Daan Herweg brings to the stage. His 2024 album In Search of the Lost Chord earned him rave reviews worldwide as ‘an ambassador for Dutch mainstream jazz’.

PARRA.DICE, the nine-headed f/x (female/non-binary) collective consists of a unique combination of three horns, a violin and extended rhythm section. Their music is a bundle of narrative melodies and percussive rhythms, fusing a lush range of musical colors into a grooving whole.
